Meteora The secluded , almost inaccessible monastery of the Holy Trinity, the katholikon of which was built in 1475-1476. Like all the monasteries at Meteora, it is richly decorated with wall-paintings and icons. Meteora, with the town of Kalambaka in the shadow of the loomings crags, witnesses of incomparable grandeur to the peculiar geological history of the wider region. The first traces of monastic life at Meteora date from the eleventh century. Mainly on the flat summits, as well as at lower points stand the monasteries of the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Rousanos, St. Nicolas Anapafsas, St Stephen and the Holy Trinity. Meteora is the second largest monastic complex in Greece, after Mt. Athos, and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The libraries and the sacristies of the monastic foundations, are repositories of sacred and dynamic arks of Christian spirituality and art |
