DELPHI
Delphi,
home of the sanctuary and oracle of the god of light Apollo, was believed
to be the navel of the world by the ancient Greeks. The largest religious
and spiritual center in Hellas, (Ancient Greece) its fame and prestige
spread throughout the Mediterranean. Men came from all corners of the
then known world to seek the priestess's wise prophecy. According to
tradition, it was at Delphi where, the two eagles met, who had been sent by Zeus to find the centre of the earth. Zeus sent the two eagles to the
ends of the earth to find the center. This myth was
the basis of the Greeks conviction that the Delphi was earth's "omphalos" or in fact emphasizes
the importance they attached to this place.
